How does a Spectrometer work?

This video explains the principles of NIR (Near Infra Red) spectroscopy in the case of Nx:

  • Intense light is emitted to penetrate the surface of produce, and
  • read the characteristics of the fruit body.

We use 2 specific nm  (nanometer) light range ranges / gratings to read and measure NDI and SCI separately.

  • Compute their values, do the SCI/NDI ratio calcs and then display the results.

And all this done within a 90x25x17 mm container in 4 secs - the benefits of spectrometers used to measure produ

Operating the Nx:

1. Hold against apple, as Nx's accuracy is sensitive to distance. 

2. Switch on Nx, by pressing button (under thumb).

3. The system loads, shines bright white light onto/into the apple.

4. The NDI (Nutrient Density Index) is then displayed. (Apologies, but our first video - will be improved) 

5. Nx has an auto-scan feature allowing you to move rapidly onto next scan.


The last scan read 40, the highest, therefore the most delicious., nutritious - the one to pick!

Operating the Nxi :

1. Similar to Nx.

2. But displays 3 readings:

    a. NDI

    b. SCI, and 

    c. the SCI/NDI ratio, for those wishing  either: 

          i) "sweetness" ( a high SCI/NDI ratio) or

          ii) "natural flavours" (a low SCI/NDI ratio).  


GMO is one reason for a high SCI/NDI ratio, see here for a food scientist opinion in 2024, when Nx first discovered this.


PLU stickers (if on item) indicate if produce is :

  • conventionally grown,
  • organically grown, or
  • genetically modified (GMO).

The Nx range  (NDI only)

  • NxC is designed for the time-poor Consumer, wanting to pick in seconds the most delicious, nutritious produce before he/she pays for it.
  • NxL is Lab grade, a for more intense 12 sec scan for accuracy and integrity, for Farmers, Growers, even wanna-be Food Scientists.

 The Nxi range (NDI, SCI and the SCI/NDI Ratio)

  • NxiC - for Consumer as above 
  • NxiL- Lab Grade as for Nx above.


Nx and Nxi are our 10th and 11th evolutions of the NutriMeter since 2010, when we first improved on the basic BRIX meter offering. There is a high correlation between Nx and BRIX values and International Ratings of poor, average, good or excellent for some 450 varieties of produce.
